Happy Valentine’s Day! Whether you love it or despise it, let’s be honest, you can’t escape it! This morning alone on my way into work I’ve seen dozens of messages on social media, balloons, flowers, the lot!
Personally, I love it. And that’s not because I’m in a relationship, I just love the positivity that this day brings. Valentine’s Day is a little reminder that we all need every now and again of what we’ve got and what we should be grateful for. Whether it’s your partner, friend, parents, dogs, anyone! Use today to practice gratitude and remind those you love just how much you appreciate them.
Showing kindness has become a bit of a lost art in the world we live in today. If you look around on your commute to work, or when you’re next walking down the street, you’ll notice the majority of people are so engrossed in either their phones or concentrating on where they’re going that they’ve become completely oblivious to their surroundings. I’m totally guilty of this 85% of the time, but I try to remind myself when I can to open my eyes to the people around me.
It’s underestimated how much of an impact kindness can make to somebody’s life. One of my favourite quotes is “everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind.” – it’s so true! You never know what somebody is going through, so your actions could possibly help somebody dramatically without even realising.
I felt that Valentine’s Day was the perfect time to share some of the small ways we can all show a bit of kindness. Here they are:
It’s as easy as that! Smile at the people around you on the train, when someone walks past your desk at work, at the person serving you in the shop, as you walk past a stranger in the street. Seeing somebody smile has a powerful effect on your own mood and you instantly feel their positive energy.
If you love someone’s outfit, or their hair, or if you thought they did really well in a meeting they were nervous about beforehand – tell them! A small compliment goes such a long way. A couple of weeks ago a lovely woman stopped me in the street much to my surprise, just to tell me she loved my outfit. That day I wasn’t feeling too confident about what I was wearing, so hearing that put the biggest smile on my face and instantly boosted my confidence!
3. Start a conversation
It can be as small as saying good morning in the lift, or asking someone how their weekend was. A lot of people experience loneliness and social isolation which can lead to depression, and you wouldn’t even know. So having somebody acknowledge them and ask them a question can have a dramatic effect on how they’re feeling. I wanted to share with you something I came across on Twitter this week, which left me with the biggest smile on my face and opened my eyes to how powerful it can be just acknowledging somebody. 4. Say thank you and please
This sounds silly but a lot of people have genuinely forgotten their manners. When somebody helps me or does something for me, it’s become a habit for me to always say “thank you, I really appreciate that.” Give people the respect they deserve, and you’ll soon notice the rewards.
5. Randomly buy someone a coffee
If you’re anything like me, you’ll understand how happy coffee can make you in the morning! Every now and again, I buy someone at work coffee who I know will be at their desk when I get in. A few months ago, I bought my colleague a coffee and as I gave it to her I noticed how upset she was about something that had happened at home. She told me it was just what she needed, and after a chat over our coffee she felt a million times better. It doesn’t have to be a coffee, even just a small chocolate or something, it just shows you’ve thought about them.
Could you imagine what a positive, happy place it would be if everyone implemented these small acts of kindness each day?
