This time last week, we were driving home from one of the most incredible weeks of my life. A luxury retreat in the country before watching my Sister walk down the aisle! It all began on Tuesday, when Lloyd and I set off on our road trip to the Lake District, somewhere I have wanted to go since forever!
We decided to spend three nights there before making our way to Scotland for my Sister’s wedding. As we would have been driving past the Lake District anyway, it made sense to stop off for a few days and tick it off our list!
We booked to stay in a garden suite at The Gilpin Hotel in Lake Windermere and after a beautiful drive through the winding country roads we finally arrived late in the afternoon. The hotel is more like a house, with a fire roaring and a cosy, homely atmosphere. We instantly felt at home!
After checking into our room and having a dip in the hot tub outside, we made our way back into the hotel to have a look around.
It’s crazy, despite the manager telling us they were 95% booked, we barely saw anyone! Everyone is off doing their own thing, either exploring the area and grounds, at the spa, or just chilling in their room, which meant it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves!
After a little explore and a cup of tea in the lounge by the fire, we headed back to our room and opened a bottle of red. Our first evening was to be spent being wined and dined in the comfort of our own room!
The table was beautifully laid, meaning all we had to do was get ready, call down to reception with our menu choices and wait for it to be served. I chucked on a dress and my fluffy slippers, put on a film and we stayed cosy until there was a knock on the door with our food.
The food was what I was most excited about during our stay, especially after hearing they’d received a Michelin Star only a couple of weeks before we arrived! And we can both honestly say it was the best food we’d ever eaten.
Back to the room, and a surprise round of canapés were delivered, along with our starters.
Duck liver pate with cubes of dark chocolate, yep, chocolate! And together it tasted absolutely delicious. Who knew?!
Unfortunately I didn’t manage to grab a photo of Lloyd’s starter before it was demolished!
Lamb for me for main, and beef for Lloyd (which again I didn’t manage to grab a photo of!).
The lamb was unbelievable. Melted in my mouth.
For dessert, Lloyd opted for the egg custard…
and wait to completely drool….I had the peanut butter, chocolate and banana dessert with banana ice cream. Heaven!
Ending with a cheeseboard, which we finished in bed along with the rest of the bottle of wine, whilst watching the Wolf of Wall Street on TV. If I could pick a perfect date night with Lloyd, honestly that is exactly how I would spend it! In my fluffy slippers with cheese and red wine in bed. Who says romance is dead?! haha!
I’d only been in the Lake District a few hours and already felt completely disconnected from my busy life in London.
We went to sleep that night with only one worry on our minds, after our 5 course meal, how on earth we were going to manage breakfast in bed in the morning! We obbbviously did manage it, but more about that in my next post!
