How To Wear Bold Prints At Work

It’s so easy to get stuck into the same routine when shopping for workwear. If we find ourselves avoiding certain colours or prints, it’s almost like our brains begin to automatically move our attention away from them completely. It becomes the safe option to always opt for black in everything and anything.

Although I’m a firm believer that black is forever chic, I also find it exciting to open my wardrobe and pull out a playful colour or print every now and again. It puts a smile on my face! I’ve actually written a separate blog post all about how wearing colour can alter your mindset for work – you can read it here!

Wearing Bold Prints In The Office

I’ve been wearing more and more prints recently, but I always make sure I keep my looks true to my style. I would describe my style as uncomplicated, so even when wearing bold, daring prints, I like to keep it simple and easy.

When I worked as an Underwriter, I loved slowly building my wardrobe with printed skirts, trousers and blouses alongside my everyday staples. ‘Less is more’ is what I would remind myself when styling these particular pieces, so I always paired them with something plain and simple. This allows the focus to remain on the prints and keep my look office appropriate.

If the thought of wearing bold prints sends shivers down your spine, don’t fear! It doesn’t have to be so scary. Here are a few easy tips to help style them for work (and the weekend too!)

Pair with a plain, block colour

You can’t go wrong with black or white, but you can also pull a colour from the pattern and pair it with that too. I’ve seen a few people really pull off the ‘clashing prints’ trend which is fun, but I think it would be too distracting for the workplace. Less definitely is more!

Layer over a muted base

Creams and nudes work really well as the base foundation to your outfit. They allow you to easily layer over a patterned piece without looking too much.

Style with a staple item

A pussy-bow blouse, a pencil skirt, a pair of trousers – whatever it may be, just keep it simple to not overshadow your statement piece.

Minimal accessories

Let your print do all the talking!
