Never underestimate the power of colour! I bet this has never even crossed your mind before, but each morning when we dress for work we base our choices upon our mood.
If you wake up feeling tired and sluggish and to the sound of rain against the window, you’re probably going to want to reach for your darkest, most comfortable outfit that requires minimal thought.
On the other hand, on those mornings when you wake up nice and early, refreshed and feeling like you want to conquer the world, you’ll find yourself exploring the colourful pieces in your wardrobe and matching your outfit to your mood!

I looked back over the past week and thought about what I’d worn to work. Last week we were fortunate enough to experience a mini heat wave and the weather was absolutely glorious. When I stepped out of bed each morning I could see the sunshine trying its hardest to get in through the curtains and as I opened them up and looked at the bright blue sky I felt instantly positive and motivated for the day ahead. My outfits each day included a pop of colour – a bright blue top tucked into a midi skirt one day, a red polka dot wrap dress the next. I received so many compliments throughout the day (especially about the red dress!) and had never felt so confident.
Fast forward a week to today and it’s a totally different story. Yesterday I left my house into the intense wind and realised I was wearing head to toe black. No colour in sight! I’ve come to realise it was because I wanted to keep my head down, get into work (and sort my hair out that the wind had kindly ruined haha), and almost just blend into the background.
And it’s not just about ourselves…not only does your choice of outfit affect your own mood, it can also transform others around you too. Do you ever feel instantly cheerier when you spot somebody walking past wearing a pop of colour and with a smile on their face?
Along with the fact I realised I have collected far too many little black work dresses, this is the reason I decided I wanted to introduce more colour to my working wardrobe this year and I’m already noticing a huge difference in both my attitude and mood.
Despite this unpredictable English weather (it’s pouring down with rain right now as I’m typing), each morning I try to make a conscious effort to not take less than 10 seconds picking out the first black dress I can find, but take my time and put together an outfit that will make me stand out, feel confident and keep me feeling positive and motivated throughout the day.
Even though I do find myself now and again opting for the darkest outfit I can find, I’m having lots of fun with colour this year and enjoying the positive vibes it brings!
Why don’t you take the challenge? Incorporate some colour into your outfit in some way each day, and see if you notice a different by the end of the week. Remember to wear your smile too!
